The ideal crystal shape is a six-sided prism, terminated with six-sided pyramids at each end. In nature quartz crystals are twinned, distorted and intergrown with adjacent with crystals of quartz or other host minerals. Crystals that typically form in a 'bed' that has unconstrained growth into a special void or pocket, these crystals are attached at the other end to a matrix, with only one termination present. A quartz geode is a situation where the void is somewhat sphere shaped, lined with a solid bed of crystals that point inward.

The name "quartz" comes from the German word "quarz", which is of Slavic origin. Quartz crystals have the ability to rotate the plane of polarization as light passes through them. They can also become polarized with a negative charge on one end and a positive charge on the other when subjected to pressure, they also will vibrate if an alternating electric current is applied to them.
