![]() HOME AZTEC NEWS MEXICO GEMSTONES SHIPPING INFO AZTEC MOON FAQ Agate, a semi-precious stone, is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, its main make-up is chalcedony, with its fine grain and bright colors. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are mainly associated with volcanic rock, but can be commonly found in certain metamorphic rocks. Most agates occur as nodules in ancient volcanic rocks, formed in cavities originally produced by the disengagement of gasses in the molten lava mass which were then filled by silica matter deposited in regular layers upon the cavity walls. Such agates, when cut exhibit a succession of parallel lines, often giving a banded appearance to the slice |

The first deposit on the wall of a cavity, forming the "skin" of the agate, is generally a dark greenish mineral substance like green earth, which are rich in iron, derived from the decompositions in the enclosing volcanic rock formation. This green silicate may give rise by alteration to a brown iron oxide, producing a rusty appearance to the outside of the agate nodule. The outer surface of an agate, freed from its matrix, is often pitted and rough, in consequence of the removal of the original coating. Agate is very solid material for brilliant, deep colors when highly polished and shaped by a professional lapidarist.
